Born and brought up in industrial South Wales, Christopher Matthews has evolved, from his distinguished career as a fashion and textile designer, into an expressive mixed medium artist.

After gaining a Distinction for his MA in Fashion & Textiles, Christopher worked for British couturier Murray Arbeid in New Bond Street. He was a founder of fashion textile design studio–The Collection and lectured in fashion at art schools and colleges. This culminated in his teaching on the MA Fashion course at St Martins.

He created hand-tufted carpets in Portugal, which were exhibited at Oscar Woollens and Robin Guild interior design stores in London. These were featured in the Observer and House And Gardens magazines. One of his rugs was chosen for an exhibition called ‘For The Floor’, which toured museums in the USA for 2 years. This, as a direct result of showing his portfolio to the renowned gallerist, Holly Solomon, when he was in New York with a fashion textile collection.

In 2020 Christopher was offered the opportunity to take up a 3 month residency at the prestigious EKWC, European Ceramic Centre, in Holland, with its amazing tutors and facilities, where anything was possible. Anish Kapoor, Anthony Gormley, and Tony Cragg, were past residents.

Christopher’s work is about reflection, on the front and often the back, to produce dimensional pieces using multiple materials.

Laser cut metal, wood and paper, copper wire, clay stoneware, porcelain, glass and coloured pigment onto canvas – sometimes cast in resin. The materials are often combined. From minimal to highly decorated opulence. His forms are sometimes assembled from deliberately broken paper, ceramic and glass. These pieces are accented by florescent pigments, that emit a reflective light, from behind and beneath the piece.
